Freebase vs Nicotine Salt
Almost every strength decision comes down to which of these two you are buying, because they behave completely differently in the throat and in the device.
Freebase — 0mg, 3mg, 6mg (up to ~18mg)
Plain nicotine. It gets progressively harsher on the throat as strength rises, which is why it is sold low. Made for sub-ohm and direct-to-lung kits, which vaporise a lot of liquid per puff, and for larger refillable tanks. 0mg is nicotine-free.
Nicotine salts — 20mg and above
Nicotine with an acid added, which makes it smooth enough to inhale at high strength and quicker to absorb. This is what goes in pod kits and disposables, where each puff produces far less vapour, so the liquid has to be stronger to be satisfying.

Two things worth knowing, neither of them commercial.

What is the difference between freebase nicotine and nic salts?
Freebase is nicotine in its plain form. It gets harsh in the throat as the strength rises, so it is normally sold at 0mg to 6mg for higher-power sub-ohm devices, and up to around 18mg for low-power mouth-to-lung kits. Nicotine salts have an acid added, which makes them much smoother to inhale at high strengths and absorb faster — that is why 20mg to 50mg liquids and almost all pre-filled pods and disposables use salts.
Which nicotine strength should I choose?
Match it to the device first. High-power sub-ohm kits produce a lot of vapour per puff, so they take low strengths — 3mg or 6mg freebase. Small pod kits and disposables produce far less vapour per puff, so they use 20mg and above in salt form. Choosing a high strength for a sub-ohm device means taking in far more nicotine than intended, and a low strength in a pod usually leaves people vaping constantly.
Can I put 50mg nic salt in a sub-ohm tank?
No. Sub-ohm tanks and high-wattage kits vaporise several times more liquid per puff than a pod does. Using a 50mg salt in one delivers a very large nicotine dose and is unpleasant and unsafe. Keep salts of 20mg and above to low-power pod devices, and use 3mg to 6mg freebase in sub-ohm hardware.
